Guitar Heroes

Below are four links to some pretty decent guitarists, mostly acoustic, that I thought might be worth a listen.

Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed

Ralph Towner, the guitarist for the group, “Oregon”

Jamaica Stopover

Lenny Breau, who, for those of you not familiar with him, deserves a few words of introduction. Many professionals in music ranging from jazz to country music regard him as one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived. It’s unfortunate that he led a short and tragic life and didn’t record much professionally because of his drug use and emotional instability. I actually first heard him while visiting a friend in Toronto around 1967. My friend told me that I absolutely had to see a country music act headed by Hal Lone Pine at a local bar, since the guy's son was an astounding guitarist. Throughout most of the set, Lenny just did competent but unremarkable backup to mainstream country songs, but, during the one showcase that his father generally allowed him each gig, he played Jerry Reed's "The Claw," and I was just speechless. Beyond the main theme, most of his playing is pure jazz improvisation.

The Claw
