Call for Diaries!

(originally published Dec 9, 2013)

Agonist Diaries are back!

One of the best features of the old Agonist was USER DIARIES. After considerable effort, we’ve restored that function to the new WordPress platform.

All Agonist registered users can now create their own Diary entries.  Posts can be on any subject but are subject to respecting the copyright of others and a few other obvious rules.

The goals for Diaries include:

  • Opening the Agonist up to a broad spectrum of ideas and topics;
  • Encouraging more communication on these ideas and viewpoints in the Diaries section and on the Main Page; and,
  • Broadening the reach of the Agonist.

There will be a Diaries tab on the top menu bar of the front page (like the Newswire tab).  This will take user to a listing of recent diaries with headlines and opening paragraphs. There will also be an Author’s Page button allowing anyone to search for recent posts by their favorite authors.

The Agonist Team of Editors will look for posts to promote to the front page and increase posting options for those users who seek to be regular front page authors.

See this link for basic instructions on posting using the WordPress software.

Please take a look at the Rules page before posting.

If you have questions or your email-of-record has changed, please use the Contact page to communicate with us.

We look forward to your participation.

Special thanks to Agonist Editor steeleweed for doing the hard work to make this possible.

Welcome to The Agonist!

  • Attention:
We have enabled a ‘starter group’ with the ability to post Diaries entries.

The enabling process involves manually promoting, user by user, so bear with us. It will take time to work our way through the hundreds of users.
If anyone is particularly anxious to become a ‘diarist’ and potential Front Page writer, please use the Contact page to get in touch and we’ll pay special attention to your request.

        Thank You

So they click diaries in the category box?

    • Regular authors (including Rook) can select any category they like, but Diaries will not show on Front Page, only thru the Diaries tab on the Menu bar.

Some newly-promoted people will not see a choice of category when they write a post – they are ‘locked’ to Diaries category for the time being. Eventually, depending on the content of their posts, the ‘lock’ may be removed and they will just be ‘regular’ authors.

The Diaries category (and Newswire) were always viewable via the dropdown list in the left sidebar but we duplicated this functionality on the Menu bar, figuring it will used frequently.

The Authors page lets people view recent posts by their favorite writer.
The Recent Diaries widget in the right sidebar is for those particularly interested in Diaries.

  • Yeaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!! Nice to have the Diaries back! Now, pass the popcorn!

  • BTW:
We emailed some who were newly promoted to write Diaries.
Some of the emails bounced because the email address we have is (obviously) defunct.
If you suspect you are one of these, please use the Contact page to provide us your current email address.

One way you can tell if you have posting status is in the black bar at the top of the page.
If you are logged in and see ‘NEW’ as one of your options, you can post.

    Super!

    That is all.

Thanks for all your hard work, should be fun.

    • Steeleweed worked like a Trojan to get this done. He’s moved on from mainframe maven to cloud connoisseur and put this together.

We didn’t do the conversion to WordPress but we’re trying to restore former features. This is a big part of it.

I’d just like to praise you, Michael and Steeleweed , for successfully resurrecting the Agonist from the slumbering ashes of obliteration.

Instead of allowing the Agonist to die peacefully, you’ve turned it into a vibrant and relevant blog once more.

    Well done!!!

Now lemme get back to what issues I’m pissed off about :-)

Sheesh, I just read all the mud-slinging comments in this post. I was so thrilled to see JPD’s name. But, alas, the thrill turned into disappointment.

A truly intelligent person understands that dissipating his/her vast knowledge is more effective if it is done in a respectful manner.

Rule #1 – Never address your audience as: “those folks” as this insinuates you consider yourself to be far superior. This sets up an immediate block to effective communication. Instead of engaging the audience in a mutually respectful discussion about the topic at hand, you’ve put it in a defensive frame of mind. You see how this ended.

    Nobody benefits.

    My 2 cents.

  • NOTE:
The Authors Tab has been removed from the Menu bar.
Turned out the code necessary for that disabled some of the Editor functions.
We are trying to establish a work-around so we can get this function back.

  • Just a FYI: There are no longer Subscribers (only able to comment). Once the spammers were eliminated and a ‘gatekeeper function’ set up to keep them out, I promoted the rest of the Subscribers to Diarists, who can post only Diaries articles.

Admins/Editor/Authors may optionally select Diaries Category when they feel it’s appropriate to their subject.

Thanks for that ‘How To’ link, Michael. :-)
