BuhBye! Don't Let The Door Hit You On Your Way Out!

I suppose eventually Joe Paterno will reveal what he was thinking when confronted with allegations of child rape by a graduate assistant in 1998. He claims he was only told of fondling and horseplay, but Mike McQueary (who has his own complicity to answer for) testified that he specifically mentioned anal rape.

At 84, it's conceivable that Paterno has learned to filter that effectively, to hear ugly truths as less-ugly euphemisms. We all learn coping mechanisms and for someone who both lived his life in a regimented, authoritarian organization (and led it for most of that time) as well as being a man who clearly spent a lot of time in church, another authoritarian patriarchal hierarchy, perhaps he's trained himself to ignore the underside of both.

Whatever. He got what was coming to him last night. His reaction, stunned disbelief, speaks to so many things about the psyche of the privileged that it would take a book by a psychologist to fully probe this reaction.

I honestly think he believed that, by offering to fall on his sword-- at his convenience, of course-- he could save himself the embarrassment of a firing. After all, there's only three games left in the regular season schedule and no Bowl would dare give Penn State a post-season bid now. Imagine the shock.

The trustees really had no choice: they have to deal in the real world, not the insular world of the spoiled. Those are the folks who have to go out and fund raise, and look donors in the eye and explain how a man could go three decades and do the bare minimum to protect the community at large. By taking swift and decisive action, they at least restore a little faith that the entire university ain't broken.

Paterno, Graham Spanier, McQueary, former athletic director Tim Curley, and former university vice president Gary Schultz will likely face criminal charges for at least perjury until the entire story is sorted out. Absolutely, they should (the Pennsylvania and United States Departments of Education have already announced inquiries into the matter.)

There are no sympathetic figures here. The best you can say is that some people did the bare minimum to comply with the law, but not with morals and conscience, and they had every opportunity to do more, but for whatever failing-- loyalty to a friend, ambition to rise in an organization, fealty to a university, fear, repulsion, perhaps even stunned silence reliving old memories of his childhood-- it is outrageous that this little boy and at least a half dozen others suffered for their silences.

Live with that image, gentlemen.

Honest, ethical persons will *not* advance beyond the lower rungs of the management ladder.

Political skills, which include euphemism and selective blindness are *necessary* to be able to advance into middle and upper management.

Most likely Paterno felt he'd be long gone before this broke, so overlooked it so as to maximize Sandusky's usefulness as a coach.

Same excuse as the Catholic heirarchy used in overlooking the child-molesting priests...they were sooo useful to the Church otherwise..

is money. The more you earn, the more power you get, the more invincible you feel. Hidden sinful urges usually surface as a result if they exist.

I would like to know who the rich guys are that Sandusky pimped kids out to.

Sandusky is due to be switching to the post of wide receive in prison, and will be seeing much play from his teammates.

Karma.

...about the state of our society...
What the hell are these people being taught?

Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows,or with both~FDouglas

1. Why didn't McQueary stop the rape when it was in progress? Was he afraid of getting wet (sounds ridiculous, but sometimes the mundane goes through people's minds when confronted with a bizarre situation)? Did he fear Sandusky, either physically (a little bit hard to believe since McQueary isn't a small guy and Sandusky was naked and not able to run away easily), or politically because of his authority at PSU? If he acknowledged to himself that the boy was 10, and obviously not a consenting adult, didn't he realize that a crime was happening at the moment? Didn't he have the slightest concern about getting the boy to safety?

2. The criminal complaint states that two people - Curley and Schultz - lied when they testified they were never told by McQueary that he witnessed anal rape (rather than just "horsing around"). Why wasn't Paterno charged with the same crime, since he made the same allegation? Assuming McQueary is very credible, as the report describes him, and he told everyone about the rape's details, why didn't anyone up the chain of command understand that this was a crime that needed to be reported, otherwise they were complicit in the crime?

3. When the rape occurred in 2002, was Sandusky no longer an employee of the university (I am not sure what status "emeritus" has beyond giving Sandusky privileges on campus)? Did Paterno and others feel he was beyond their power and was really somebody else's problem? [None of this exonerates them of the need to report a crime].

4. How much did Paterno and Curley know of Sandusky's previous run-ins with the police on child molestation charges? Did they know about the mother who confronted him about molesting her son? It seems more than coincidental that the refusal to give Sandusky the head coaching job at PSU was timed shortly after the police investigation into him was underway in 1998. Assuming Paterno and others knew this man had a history of pedophilia, why didn't the 2002 allegation result in them "throwing him to the wolves" to get the man off the streets, or at the very least away from children?

5. Why didn't anyone try to find out what happened to the 10 year old boy? By 2002 the Catholic Church pedophilia scandal was in full bloom. People had to know that pedophiles look for situations where they can be around children, and repeat their crimes until external circumstances force them to stop. Paterno is a practicing Catholic and knew what the victims in that scandal had gone through. He had to wonder whether there were other children involved, and future children at stake if he did nothing to stop Sandusky.

6. Why was the same man the attorney for the university and The Second Mile charity? He managed to get the police to drop their 1998 investigation. What advice did he give the university in 2002? Did he urge them to go lenient on Sandusky? If so, why was he shielding Sandusky when he already knew there was a history of this behavior?

7. What was it about the PSU atmosphere that allowed Sandusky to engaged in criminal behavior virtually in public view in the locker room showers? Twice at least he was observed by adults, neither of whom did anything to stop him. Did he assume he was so beloved and powerful he could get away with this behavior? Is football so important at PSU that the coaching staff are treated like gods?

8. The district attorney's investigation has been underway for two years. The details have been reported publicly six months ago. Why didn't the board of trustees launch their own investigation and take action long ago? Why did the university administration act so surprised when this news came out in detail?

9. Is Sandusky free on $100,000 bail or is he in custody under a suicide watch? I've read both claims. Why would a judge grant him bail if he is already on record as "wishing he were dead" when the mother confronted him with his actions and he agreed what he did to her son was heinous?

10. What about these latest rumors that executives at The Second Mile charity had teamed up with Sandusky to pimp out children to other pedophiles? Is the district attorney looking into these assertions already or is this new information?

-------

I could go on with more questions, but the whole situation gets more and more outrageous and disgusting, now with students rioting and causing damage because their beloved father figure (Joe-Pa) was fired. The attorney for some of the victims is already afraid the town is going to turn on the victims for causing Paterno's departure. The situation is still being described by most of the press as problem with child abuse or child molestation. But the 2002 event was an obvious rape and a crime in progress. Maybe if the media talked about that fact, Paterno wouldn't be such a sympathetic figure in his demands that he be given a dignified departure.
