Considering Going BK...need More Info

Question:
I joined this newsgroup because I was hoping someone could steer me in the correct direction. I am strongly considering declaring Chapter 7 but don't know a lot about it. Is it better to file thru a lawyer or do on your own? What sort of information do you need to provide? I have a few accounts that have been charged off. They call and claim to be suing me...will BK take care of them? (they have even started harassing my family.) I've seen a number of online services. Are these reliable? Here's some more info on my situation: 1 - I owe about 50 k in CC debt. 2 - 12k in a car loan 3 - 3 cards are charged off and 2 are saying they are going to sue me. How can they sue me? What does this do? Does this effect a BK at all? Is it better to do before or after a court case. I assume before so that that debt is just charged off. Also, for the car. Can I include that in a BK? If so, do I lose the car? Can I keep the car and maintain payments?

Answer:
The bankruptcy exemptions and other issues are different for different states, so if you say what state you live in, that might help. You should definitely talk with a bankruptcy attorney in your area. Many provide free initial consultations. It should only take one visit to find out what your options are, whether filing bankruptcy would work for you, when to file, etc.
