Applying For Financial Aid?
I'm scared to ask this question, because I'm scared as to what I'm going to have to tell my daughter about her college dreams. Does anyone have any experience/advice regarding applying for financial aid while parents are in c.13 bankruptcy? One of our daughters is a senior in high school. The other will be before we're done with c.13. If we were responsible parents, we'd have decent enough incomes such that we would never qualify for financial aid in the form of grants - but as it is, all of our disposable income is going to our creditors via c.13. We can't even afford the application fees. I realize that she may be eligible for some student loans on her own and can do work-study, but obviously we can't apply for any loans as her parents. Does anyone know how the financial aid process works, and would they take into account, on behalf of my innocent daughter, inability of parents to contribute due to bankruptcy? She is applying for scholarships, but alas, although a decent student, not extremely competitive in this area so chances of academic scholarship is low. This is so depressing that not only did we screw up our own lives, that we've jeopardized the chances for success of our children. Please help. Please give us hope.
Answer:
I am far from an expert of BK but I know a little about colleges. First, be up front with the schools. Most schools will let you waive the application fee. Second, apply early and get your paperwork in as soon as possible. They will need to see your taxes. Three, consider having your daughter apply to schools that either: 1. want her for geographic distribution. 2. is slightly below her level so they will shell out bucks to get her.
