Personal Bankruptcy In NYC???
As a single person on disability I have several questions concerning filing in Manhattan: 1. Can anyone direct me to a website that explains the process in detail? 2. Are there any forums for NYC where one can share experiences? 3 Is there a listing of reputable lawyers that I can access? Are the lawyers listed on the AARP website a good idea? Has anyone used them? 4. When you go to the creditors meeting can they ask personal questions about your disability? Thanks in advance!
Answer:
I have written a Bankruptcy FAQ which should answer many of your questions about what is involved--it may be found at http://users.erols.com/lawyer/FAQ/br_faq.htm. I strongly recommend speaking with a local bankruptcy attorney. Most offer free initial consultations and he or she should be able to review your specific situation and let you know what you can and can't do. I can't speak to the qualifications of the AARP attorneys; I do know that they charge for a listing. If you tell me the largest city near you, I'll see if I can refer you to someone. It is unlikely that the Trustee will ask detailed questions about your disability; however, he or she will probably want some general information, such as cause, duration, impact on your earning capacity, etc.
