Newbie With Question

Question:
im in some pretty serious debt at the moment (credit cards, student loans) and i've been trying to decide what to do about it. bankruptcy seems like it may be a little too drastic a step for me at the moment, so i was wondering what you guys here have to say, if anything, about these 'debt repair' agencies, like ameridebt for example. do these people actually lower your payments, cut pay back time, lower or remove interest rates, etc.. as they claim to do? i was just wondering if anyone here has had any experience with these type of agencies. thanks a lot for the help.

Answer:
I've dealt with CCCS in years past, and my experience, which echoes that of many others, was that they tend to bungle the handling of the "debt management" pretty badly -- in fact, two of my creditors showed me as having a year straight of 120-day-late delinquencies AFTER entering the program, even though I'd been paying my CCCS obligation religiously. What killed me is that it was only AFTER I'd voluntarily discontinued the CCCS program that I was able to properly bring all my accounts current... which they remained until my BK7 last year.
