What Is The Difference Between Computer Aided Design And Computer Aided Manufacturing

Q: My question is what is the difference between CAD and CAM? I saw Autocad running in our school's graphics lab and I know it is CAD and this drawing could be converted to CAM file how? And what softwares does it use to convert CAM file.

A: Computer Aided Design or Computer Aided Drafting Also known as CADD: Computer Aided Design and Drafting Software examples = AutoCAD, Pro-Engineering, CADKEY, Pro-CAD, Turbo-CAD, Visio and CAM? Computer Aided Manufacturing Software that aids in Computer numerically controlled manufacturing. Software examples = SmartCAM, MasterCAM, BOBCAD Drawing Interchange files can be generated by CAD programs that CAM programs can import. The geometry imported by the CAM program can be used to define tool paths for machine tools so that they can apply the geometry to real world objects. And AutoCAD and some other CAD programs can generate the Drawing Interchange File (*.DXF). This is the kind of file that is importable and whose geometry can be used to define the vectors in the CAM file.
