What Do Think About This Driving Test Question?
Q: My daughter just failed her test, because of an utterly bizarre rule being
applied by the examiner. She was asked to cross over a roundabout following
signs to the A36. There are 3 lanes on the approach, the left and middle
ones say A36 and the right one says somewhere else. She took the middle
lane. The examiner said this was potentially dangerous and failed her. I was
in the back of the car and know exactly what she did, all with exemplary
care and safety. Who pray is allowed to use the middle lane then? I have
checked the Driving Instructor's Handbook and there is nothing in it about
this.
A:you are not mistaken, and I agree that it's possibly preferable to take
the left lane, but actually you can't see the lanes until you are nearly
there as they are round a bend. The question is, `is it potentially
dangerous'? The DSA's idea of danger seems to me to be rather inventive. I
might just about accept a driving fault for this, but a serious one?
Certainly not. If there is any potential danger in taking the middle lane
then what is it for? This kind of idiocy brings the test into disrepute, and
does nothing for road safety. I have been totally unable to find any
documented support for this policy.
