Zoloft Weight Gain

You have for sure heard the saying, "damned if you do and damned if you don't." But you may not have experienced it until you experienced Zoloft weight gain during the period in which you took the antidepressant and then experienced more Zoloft weight gain as you were withdrawing from the drug. But such is the nature of many of the SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) like Zoloft. A person will gain weight while on it and gain weight while coming off it. One Zoloft weight gain account, taken from a pharmaceutical forum: "...My weight sky rocketed from 135 to 260 within those five years [between 1995 and 2000]. The physician never questioned Zoloft as being the cause of this enormous (and unhealthy) weight gain, he just kept writing those prescriptions ... more Zoloft, more Zoloft. Well, this summer I stopped 'cold turkey.' I immediately noticed that my [once diminished] sex drive returned...And then the weight LOSS: the pounds are melting away. My food intake has returned to 'normal'. Had I known that Zoloft would have caused the negative impact on my general health and well being I would have NEVER, NEVER permitted this medication into my body. Since summer I have lost a total of forty (40) pounds of ZOLOFT fat." Another Zoloft weight gain account, taken from a pharmaceutical forum: "...For every one day that you are off of the Zoloft, is one day away from being on meds, and one day closer to your goal. I have taken Zoloft for 2 1/2 years, gained almost 50 lbs, before I decided to finally get off...." And a Zoloft weight gain account from one who gained weight during the withdrawal phase (also taken from a forum): ""Been getting off of Zoloft for 3 weeks now. I had a weight gain of 25 Lbs in about 2-3 weeks. Will this subside and my motabalism [sic] return to normal?..." While three accounts do not a whole survey make, it is clear--if you read the hundreds accounts--that Zoloft weight gain is, unfortunately, a common side effect of both use and withdrawal. Whether it's worth the benefits of the antidepressant that saves lives is up to you.
