Food Nutritional Information

Eating not only serves as fuel for the energy needs of the body, but also to guard the body against chronic system diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Food also prevents diseases and checks conditions such as obesity, weight issues and metabolic conditions.

There are seven main categories of nutrients that we have to consume to be safe from serious illnesses when discussing food nutritional information. These are vitamins, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, water and fiber. Usually, the nutritional value of a given food product is placed on labels on the packaging to enable consumers to evaluate the contents in the food item. This information is given in a format prescribed by law, and allows for the comparison of foods since they give a breakdown of nutrients contained in the food.

Fats are made up of fatty bonded to a glycerol. Fats can either be saturated or unsaturated. For saturated fats, they are normally solid at room temperature while unsaturated fats are usually liquid.

On the other hand, dietary fiber contains cellulose. This cellulose is indigestible because the human system does not have enzymes to digest it. Fruits and vegetables are rich in fiber. Dietary fiber is important for its provision of bulk to the contents of the intestine. It also stimulates peristalsis, the rhythmic muscular contractions along the digestive tract.

Further, nearly seventy percent of the non-fat mass of the human body is made of water. About twenty percent of all the water that you take into your body comes solely from food. The rest is often derived from ordinary drinking water as well as beverages. On the other hand, water is often excreted out of our bodies in various forms, including through urine and feaces, through sweating and by exhalation of water vapor in breath.

Minerals, on the other hand are the chemical elements required by living organisms including humans, some of which are calcium, magnesium and sodium. Others are cobalt, iodine, iron manganese, zinc and so on. These can also be acquired in form of nutritional supplements.

Besides, carbohydrates and proteins are the other nutrients that are important for a healthy, well being. There are complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates. While simple carbohydrates are processed quickly, complex carbohydrates take longer to metabolize. Proteins are composed of amino acids, and are important for muscles, skin and hair production and replacement. Vitamins are also very essential for health and growth, and very necessary nutrients to have in daily diet.
