White Gold Opal Ring, Mixing Metals - Faux Pas?

Q: What is the consensus on mixed metals - in all variations: -randomly mixed metals? -two or more metals in the same piece of jewelry? -what about wedding/engagement rings - does it matter if one's wedding ring is gold but all other jewelry silver/platinum/white gold or vice versa?

A: I have mixed metal pieces too such as the Tiffany silver heart bracelet with the gold heart in the center as well as a Rosellini silver and gold necklace. I do not like to mix metals unless I can add one of these mixed pieces. I wear two rings on a daily basis - a rose gold puzzle ring on my left and and a silver Claddagh on my right. Both have sentimental value and Ilove the way they look. Most of my other jewelry is in the silver family, or anodized metal. I don't have much gold. I do have a dress watch that I wear on my left wrist which combines silver & gold and I think ties the look together really well. My bracelets are all silver and they go on my right wrist with the silver ring, so no clashing there! Anyway, I obviously have no objections to mixing metals! When it comes to wedding sets, my only criteria is that the two rings compliment each other. They don't need to be a purchased set but if you have a vintage engagement ring, the wedding band should be of a similar style. My brother designed his wedding band which mixes three shades of gold, and I might do something similar when the time comes. Most of my jewelry is silver or platinum - my wedding rings are platinum, and I wear them every day. If I'm going to wear gold necklace and/or earrings (rare), I make sure that I'm wearing my two-tone Skagen watch. This sort of ties it together for me. I really like the way silver-toned metals look on me more than gold. It's definitely a very personal thing.
