What Wedding Jewelry Did You Pick? Would You Pick It Today?

Q: I have a major-ish wedding anniversary approaching, and I'm wondering what "my" style of wedding/engagement rings really is. I'm looking for ideas. If you got your ring a long time ago, do you still like it? Did you feel pressure to get a diamond? Is yellow gold absolutely and completely dowdy and passe? (In the latest L'Officiel magazine, I noticed that there was not a single jewelry advertisment that featured yellow gold; everything was white gold or platinum.) I used to think that my ideal engagement ring would be a good-sized emerald cut diamond solitaire set in platinum, (like the one Kay Francis wears in _Jewel Thief_) but when I tried some on, they left me cold. Should I get that pave wedding ring and just skip the solitaire? It does feel more "me."

A:honestly? I think you've answered your own question :-) Also there is no rule that says you have to go for an engagement style of ring, given your anniversary, perhaps you could go for an eternity ring instead. I find that the scope for the designs on those is far greater than on engagement rings. My husband and I have been married nearly 5 years and last Christmas he surprised me with a belated engagement ring which is gorgeous and totally suits my taste. The pave ring sounds beautiful, Priscilla, but I would get the platinum setting. I just think diamomds belong with platinum, but really, go with your heart. If you like yellow gold, that's what you should get. It is you that needs to be happy with it, don't worry about what anyone else thinks. It will still be gorgeous. Right there is your answer. The ring that speaks to you is the one you should get. For the record, I got a solitaire diamond engagement ring, was the only kind we could afford at the time, and then I got a band that has diamonds that surround the solitaire for my wedding band. All in yellow gold, couldn't be more pleased, 9 years later :)
