Solitaire Diamond Ring With Enhancers, Buying Ring Alone Or Together ?

Q: Do men generally purchase the engagement and wedding rings by themselves or do they choose the rings together with their girlfriends? I asked my girlfriend if she wanted to go together to buy the rings, and she surprised me by saying that she wanted me to make the choice on my own initiative. I have to admit that I have never bought any jewelry before and don't know where to begin. In contrast, she has a lot of jewelry and seems quite particular about her choices. I really don't want to buy something she is not going to like. Any suggestions?

A:My suggestion in your case would be to go to a jewelry store that has proposal rings. They allow you to buy a ring to purpose with (typically a standard design with a solitare diamond) then after the proposal and if the woman says "yes"!! You return to the store and pick out an engagement ring and bridal set to her liking. This allows you to pop the question without her really knowing when and what the ring will look like. But will give you the ease of knowing that she will be able to pick out something nice later that she will want to have on her hand for the rest of her life. If that doesn't work. My suggestion would be to look at the style of rings that she currently owns and maybe take a few pictures of them when she isn't around. Then take the photo's to a jewelry store and ask a lady employee to help you pick something out for her in your girlfriends "style". 1. Take her window shopping with you and pay particular attention to what she oohs and ahhs over. 2. Tell her what you have told us--that you don't trust your judgement for so large a purchase for someone else and ask her if she will go to a jewelry store with you and at least try on rings and indicate four or five she really likes and let you go back and buy one of them. There was a thread here earlier this week from someone who received an engagement ring she didn't really like, sentimental enough to want to keep that ring, but torn between that and finding one she loved. Sometimes people don't really knw their own minds as clrealy as they think they do! My husband took me to choose a ring and I was very glad cause my girlfriend got a yuckie ring and her fiancee think it's a cool one. Sorry guys, we can trust your taste. Better take a girl with you when you're shopping for the important stuff.
