Ring Pillow Alternatives?

Q: I need an idea for an alternative to a ring pillow. Since our rings are going to be carried by our 33-year old best man I think a heart-shaped pillow adorned with lace and ribbons is slightly inappropriate. I do want something though, and my wedding-craft books haven't helped at all.

A:I have seen "ring boxes" advertised in one of the many bridal junk catalogues I have received. You could make one yourself by covering a small cardboard or wood chip box (available at craft stores) with white satin or brocade and trimming it. In my experience, the rings have NEVER actually been on the ring pillow- too much chance for a loss on the way down the aise, etc. There are usually "mock" wedding rings on the pillow with the real rings in the BM's posession. As such, I don't think your situation is any different from all the other times we've used a ringbearer's pillow in the weddings we've done. Why not skip the pillow. I seriously doubt that any of the guests will notice. I can not think of an elegant way your BestMan can carry a pillow down the aisle. I have shot many weddings where there was not ring bearer, or pillow. Aside, my wife made our pillow (carried down the aisle by her seven year old cousin). She tied the rings onto the pillow with silk ties. Yes, they were the real rings. It worked out fine. One of our ushers will be holding our wedding rings too, but we still will have a ring bearer who will be carrying a ring pillow down the aisle. The pillow will be holding two fake gold wedding bands is all, not the actual wedding rings. Anyway, that's just our choice, it's not a rule and that's not what you were asking about and I have not intention of trying to talk you into or out of anything you have in mind for your wedding. I actually did think of something you might like. A high school friend of mine did this at her wedding years ago. She had a younger boy (about jr. usher age, I recall) carry a family bible down the aisle (he followed the BMs who were all escorted down the aisle by an usher). Her mother had covered the Bible in white satin with all sorts of stuff on it, like peach satin ribbon (her wedding color) and silk flowers with pearl beading around the edge and two lace hearts centered on the cover in which she had embroidered their names in one heart and their wedding date in the other, or something like that. This was several years ago, and I don't recall the exact artistic details, but you could alter this idea to suit your tastes. I remember thinking it was so cool and didn't even give a second thought to the fact that she didn't even have a "ring bearer" in her wedding. If you choose to do this and the RB is a young boy, you might want to use a lighter Bible than was her family Bible. A 2- or 3- year old child might have a difficult time carrying something as heavy as her 100 year-old large (and heavy) heirloom Bible. The Precious Moments Bible would be light enough, and even uncovered it would be very cute to have a young child carry it down the aisle in place of a satin ring pillow. But I still think there isn't anything wrong with a ring pillow in your case, since few people I've seen at weddings recently have the real wedding rings attached to the pillow anyway. Oh, and something we are still considering for our wedding is having my fiance's sister carry with her in the processional the sheet music and lyrics for the song she's going to sing in our wedding. Not a big deal by itself, but she wrote the music and lyrics just for us and I was hoping to have it framed in satin fabric for her, as a keepsake. If you're doing something special or unique for your wedding, like having a poem recited that one of you wrote, or whatever, then the RB could carry the written text framed in satin fabric or something like that. It'll would probably be about the same size as a typical ring pillow, so he mostly likely would not have any trouble with its size/weight. Anyway, these are just a few ideas that came to mind....
