Travel The London Underground

While visiting London in the U.K., you will probably need to take the most convenient form of public transportation on occasion. For most city travelers, that is the underground, or "tube" as it is known. The high-speed subway whisks passengers from one destination to another in a matter of minutes. Fast, efficient, and economical, the underground is used by people from all walks of life. Here are a few tips for your next visit: 1. Board and disembark carefully. A recording of the attendant's voice calls "Mind the gap!" as doors swing open. Indeed, you should watch your step as there is a slight gap of a few inches in width between the train and the platform. It is not wide enough for a person to slip into usually, but you might drop a parcel or get your shoe stuck if not careful. Be mindful of pushy, fast-paced travelers who can nearly knock you over to get on or off the train. 2. Take some cool refreshment. A bottle of water will be welcome on warm days. The tube can become quite warm, and some passengers report feeling faint. But the majority seem to handle their trip just fine. Sipping cool water may help to alleviate any sense of warmth or skin flushing when the temperatures climb. 3. Keep an eye on your packages. Set briefcase, parcel, or other appurtenances nearby when you take a seat. If the train becomes crowded you could lose sight of a valuable tucked behind your seat, and it could be gone in an instant. It's a good idea to label the things you plan to carry with you on a regular basis. 4. Be wary at isolated tube stops. Although the underground train is usually quite safe, try to travel in a pair or group after dark. Avoid waiting in dark, empty stations if possible. If you get off and feel that you are being followed, walk immediately to a well-lit store or area and ask for help. 5. Buy a pass. Instead of making change for frequent trips on the tube, buy a pass if you plan to use it for several days or a week or so. It will be much more convenient to show your pass than to dig a few coins out of your pocket each time. Taking the tube is fun and easy. Just use common sense and you should be fine!
