When most people think of Switzerland, they think of its cheese, chocolates, watches and its snow capped mountains. However, if you travel to Switzerland you will find that this small and beautiful country has a lot more going for it. Switzerland is impeccably clean and orderly with a unique and robust national culture influenced by the bordering countries of Germany, Austria, Italy and France. Switzerland is also home to the majestic Alps the wild beauty of which presents an interesting contrast to the country. Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is a small but exquisite city with beautifully preserved buildings dating back to the 15th century. This has earned for Bern the status of being a designated World Heritage site. The other Swiss cities of Geneva and Zurich are equally famous. Geneva houses over 200 international organizations including the UN headquarters. The attractions here include the Cathedral St Pierre, Place du Bourg de Four, the Petit Palais and various museums. Zurich, located on the banks of the River Limmat, is fast emerging as one of the intellectual and cultural centers of Europe. With modern and innovative bars, restaurants and shops rubbing shoulders with 16th and 17th century architecture. Some other places that you must travel to are Ch?teau de Chillon, Lucerne and the Jungfrau region. Lake Thun has some of the best castles in Europe. Switzerland is also a great place for outdoor activities of all kinds. The Alps and the Jura slopes are great places for skiing. Zermatt in the Alps is famous for its year round skiing and people travel here from all parts of the world for that reason. Some of the other popular outdoor activities in Switzerland include hiking, mountaineering, paragliding, hang gliding, rafting and canoeing. Switzerland is great any time of the year. However, the best time to travel to Switzerland is between June and September. If you are keen on winter sports, the best time to travel to Switzerland is between late November and early April.
