During your stay in Glasgow, you can tour the city, which dates back to the sixth century, when St. Kentigern (AKA St. Mungo) built a church in the area. As Glasgow grew in importance, it became the site of a 13th century cathedral and in 1451, the home of the second university in all of Scotland. By the 1600s, Glasgow was trading in tobacco, sugar, and cotton with North America. Later, the city was known best for its heavy industry and shipbuilding. Glasgow's elegant buildings stand as testimony to the wealth of shipbuilders and industrialists. Today, Glasgow is a celebration of Scotland's history and culture. While taking in the magnificent architecture of the city, you can take a break to experience tea in the original Room De-Luxe at the Willow Tea Rooms, or any of the offerings of Glasgow's bistros, restaurants, cafes, and tea rooms. Then go back to the streets and the intricacies of Glasgow Cathedral and Glasgow Necropolis, gothic buildings of the 12th and 13th centuries. If you prefer 19th century architecture, be sure to visit the City Chambers. Other must-visits are the Pollock House, Burrell Collection gallery, and the Botanic Gardens. [Glasgow is translated from Gaelic as "The Dear Green Place."] Allow yourself to be intrigued by the evolution of vehicles. Discover the Glasgow Museum of Transport. Free tours are available, or go it alone. You'll be amazed at the vast assortment of cars, caravans, carriages, carts, bicycles, buses, fire engines, steam locomotives, prams, and trams. The Glascow Science Centre (GSC) demonstrates the world of science and technology in new, fun, and exciting ways that people of all ages can enjoy. You can passively visit the ScottishPower Planetarium and watch an IMAX(R) movie, or actively engage in hands-on exhibits, interactive workshops (30 minutes each), live science shows or labs, or use the Online facility. Be sure to take in the view of the city from Glasgow Tower, the only building in the world capable of turning 360 degrees from the ground up. The slender design of the tower is aerodynamic and turns to face the wind, which reduces wind resistance. Unfortunately, the tower is not wheelchair accessible.
