Retirement Care - Choosing Your Doctors

For many people, an important part of retirement care is the medical industry. And while there are thousands of physicians, optometrists, dentists and specialists available, finding the right one for you isn't always easy. There are some steps you can take to be sure you have the best medical care possible, even without spectacular insurance. One of the best referrals for a doctor's services is word of mouth. Finding a great doctor will often take no longer than a phone call to a friend. A word of caution - many physicians limit their case load. They may only accept new patients during a particular time frame and many limit the number of elderly patients they care for. Some even limit the number of patients with particular health insurance plans (or those with no health insurance). If you have a physician currently, don't plan to move to another until you're sure that you'll be accepted. If you're moving, start looking for a doctor before you get there. This is especially true if you have existing medical conditions that need constant attention or monitoring. If your retirement care includes the need for nursing assistance, you should also try to arrange for that service before you move. Retirement care for many people includes a variety of medicines, both over the counter and prescription drugs. If you're traveling, be sure you have an adequate supply before you leave. If you're moving, check with your new pharmacist before you actually need the drug to be sure it's on hand. What might be perfectly available in one area might be impossible to get in another. Remember that your medical care is an important part of your retirement care. If you have serious concerns about the level of care you are receiving from your current health care providers, voice those concerns to someone who can help you evaluate them. If your doctor doesn't answer your questions or seem concerned about problems you have, explain that you need those answers. If you don't get satisfaction, search for a new doctor. After all, these are your retirement years and your retirement care is important.
