As a standby, you register with the check in counter and wait to see if there are empty plane seats due to cancellations. If there are, you will learn about it at the last minute - just as the plane is boarding - you can take advantage of a very low last minute travel deal indeed. You will not be able to take much luggage but you will be able to travel for very little. Call airlines flying out of an airport near you to find out about their standby policy.
