The Summer In Southern CA

Q: does anybody know of where i could go for emt or phlebotomy training for the summer in southern CA . i am actually looking for direct patient care experience

A: Most California community college districts offer courses in these subjects. Although they may not be offered at every college, they're probably available through at least one college in your area. Additionally, there are a few private companies which offer this level of medical education. I only know of one, specifically, which offers EMT training. It's called Emergency Concepts, Inc., and is located in LA's San Fernando Valley. I think they're listed under the 805 area code, but you might also want to check 818. I should probably add that the courses themselves are not going to give you much, if any, direct patient care experience. Instead, they're going to teach you, over a few months, how to go out and care

for patients in very limited ways. You'll need to be able to have the time after the summer to spend doing these jobs if you actually want to have patient contact. I'm not saying that it's not worth it. I loved working as an EMT, even if I often felt that there was not all that much I could do for most of my patients. However, if you're looking for something you can do *right now* to gain patient experience, your best bet is probably to volunteer at a local hospital, nursing home, hospice, or other patient setting. It doesn't cost you much, you get plenty of patient contact, and I guarantee there are opportunities all over your local area available immediately
