Corel, Sleeman: Are They Buys?

Q: I just want to hear a few opinions about these stocks. Sam, Sleemen's is a great company. I believe this company will do very well for a long period of time. They have about 15 million outstanding, and have $28 million in shareholder equity. I would strongly reccomend a buy on this one, and have, but no one is listening to me. As for Corel, this one a a little more risky in my opinion. Basicaly their next quarter results will tell the tale. Their new Java applications are in the infancy stage, and they need steady revenue comming from Wordperfect suite. Sales so far have been respectable. I would rate this one as a speculative buy as the stock has held up around the $10 range.

A: Sleemans was overpriced at the IPO, and I advised people to short it to 4.50. I don't know if this company is ever going to make money. The G&A exenses are too high in my opinion. As for Corel, their aggressive marketing approach is severely hurting their bottom line. The question is whether the price at cost strategy will work in the long run. Also, what of Microsoft Office 97? When it comes right down to it, no one really makes any money buying stocks at retail prices. You have to buy before the public does!
