Which Solar Controller Cost The Best ?

Q: I am looking for comments on selecting "Solar Controller" for my small system which total output is 160 watt and 1 to 2 units of 100AH batteries. All the comments for the best value controller on high effeciency and protection and where to buy them will be much appreciated. Thanks for all the assists and attention.

A: i STRONGLY recommend the Trace C30A. I have sold hundreds of controllers over the past 9 years. it is the most reliable and you should be able to get one for around 100 dollars. for 30 amps and reliability, you can't do better. IMO, the Trace C30a is a poor choice. It is an old style, strictly on-off type of controller. And they will NOT handle 30 amps continuously for any long periods of time without the relay burning out or welding itself. The Trace C12, C35, C40, ProStar 12/20/30, Lyncom, and several others have a much better charging algorithm. that might be your opinion, but it's not mine. i've seen too many of the other ones come back. yes, the relay can burn out if you push it. but if you're pushing over 24 amps, you might as well get two of them. id still rather spend $200 on two c30a's than the others you mentioned. but that's just my opinion after selling hundreds of controllers over the years. i stick with what works. i've had people tell me other ones are better. i remember people used to think heliotrope cc60's were the bees knees. but EVERY one i sold came back. so i went back to the old stand by. i've sold several trace c40s, but you know, i always get calls from the customers. they can't figure out how to set them up. the red/green light is confusing. and several have failed. there's just more complicated circuitry in there. and in my opinion, the more complicated it is, the more chance there is for failure. id rather take my chances with a relay.

I have had a trace C30A for 15 years in Mexico it has been a very relible unit, but this trip it is acting up not sending a charge to the batterys unless I push on the PC board then when it cycles again it does the same thing. Any ideas?
