Solar Water Heating

Q: When I was at the homeshow, one of the things that interested me was the solar water heating that a few people were pushing. Does anyone have one installed. What sort of savings did you get out of it?

A: Probably at present not enough to pay for itself, however electricity is rising in price and that looks set to continue. The biggest problem is the short life of the units, you just about cover the cost of buying one and it fails and either needs repairing or replacing, negating your gains. In reality if the payback extends over 5 years its probably not economic to purchase. Where do you live? If its a very sunny area, with low winds and you use large quantities of not to hot water, ie a 2 or 3 children family then its starting to look worthwhile. Orientation of your roof is also critical to the panels efficiency so if your aspect is wrong its potential disappears. The heat you gain drops as the end temperature you require rises. So if you also have a smimming pool and want to heat it cheaply, this is one way to do it cost effectively. OK, then that is good, if your hot water bill is indeed that high a component of your bill then yes, solar hotwater is seriously worth looking at. Also consider your usage pattern, the water will be at its hottest early evening, so if you are all coming in off the beach and mostly shower at that time rather then in the morning then it looks an ideal pattern for maximum energy savings. What might also be worth considering is, 1) seeing if you can put the hot water cylinder on a night tarrif so its hot ready for the morning at minimal cost. 2) if you have a wood fire/burner and are using drift wood off the beach see if you can install a wet back boiler for reheating the hot water overnight.
