Would This Be Harrasment

Q: I am considering taking some sort of legal action against a company whom I worked for as I beleive I may have been harrassed. My complaints are ones of a verbal nature. When entering the room at a call centre I was taunted to be a Pedofile by someone shouting it at me as I walkedpast.. Comments where made about my appearance, ie, referred to as ugly. A person sitting beside me was making innuendos about my sexual orientation. Other people imitated me in mocking tones of voice. Every day there was something from someone until it got to the point i didnt want to goto work anymore. All I wanted to do was go to work and get my job done. Would this be considered harrasment, or am I just being a sensitive boy again ? In fact I ended up quite ill over the whole matter. If this would be harrasment what could I do as the job was only on a temporary basis ?

A: It seems like this was going on some time, did you report to a manager, either verbally or (preferably) in a letter, that this abuse was happening ? For how long did this go on for ? Are you still at that company ? As it was a temporary position, did you report the abuse to your agency ? It would seem to me that if the abusers admit some 'name-calling' you may have a chance of 'something' from it, but if not then it's likely to be your word against however many. Personally, almost all 'newcomers' and often temps are subjected to an amount of ridicule. That's not to say it's acceptable, but that it happens. If it was only for a few days and infrequently, then maybe you're being a tad sensitive and paranoid. If it went on for weeks, then I certainly wouldn't have stood for it and either followed it through with management or outside work hours with 'quiet words' with the abusers, on their own.
