Acid Reflux Diet

Q: I have been on the atkins for a year ,lost 22 pounds now i have reflux ,and it seems very possible the diet is to blame . it even sas in the litterature they gave me at the hospital with the medicine ,carbohydrates intake will help the cure of reflux .(also a depraved intake of carbs can cause the condition ) the doctor thinks the large amount of beefs and chickens is to hard on the stomach so this is most probably the cause . also the absence of milk gives up the natural coating of the stomach lining. this is a total drag and it really hurts , i have never before this diet even had heart burn ,so this comes on pretty unexpected . its pretty serious buisness if i let it go with out the medication which is very expensive Does anyone have any comment about this?

A:My guess without any information is that you may have taken the idea of a high fat diet too literally. I wonder if the beef fat is what you are rejecting rather than the diet itself. How do you fare when you emphasize chicken, turkey and extra lean cuts of broiled, drained cuts of meat? Less mayonaise and less hot spices when eating the fattier cuts of meat might offer some help. And stay away from dairy products 100% while testing responses to reduced saturated fats. Believe it or not too much iceberg lettuce gives me acid reflux. Go figure. Look at your diary and watch for patterns to see which foods are associated with the worse symptoms. Figure up to three days after consumption for a suspect food to still cause a problem. Keep good notes and find the culprit. No need to throw the baby (diet) out with the bath water (suspect foods). Make necessary adjustments in food intake and drink ALL the water less coffee and tea and soda.
