Little Torch?

Q: have a question regarding using a little torch in a small shop, which is commercial space I would like to know if there is any regulation using open flame in the store. Should I tell the landlord that I am going to make jewelry in the store using a little torch? (I am going to rent a store) Should I report to the local Fire Department? Should I install a sprinkler? Should I switch to water torch instead of oxygen & propane? In general knowledge, of course I should report everything all above but my insurance would be very high, which is another trouble. I need to know how you are managing those matters. Please tell me your experience if you run a small shop with workbench

A: - Fire laws and regualtions vary from town to town. What might be legal on one side of the street might not be on the other if you cross a border. Some places don't allow acetylene while others do. Some require and attachment between the gauges and the torch to prevent backup. I have a friend who is only allowed to use the little burns-a-matic type tanks in his store. Best to check with the local fire department to see what is allowed in your area. There is no one rule. - I recomend telling everyone EVERYTHING. If your insurance premiums are higher, it will be better than having your claim denied because you did not inform them. The fire department will make inspections, and shut you down if you are not up to code! Being in compliance with the code might even save your life if something ever goes wrong! If there ever is a fire in your location, the firefighters will unkowingly risk their lives because of their lack of knowledge as to explosive gas and oxygen tanks in the building. (This also applies to hazardous

chemicals like plating solutions) And your landlord might just kick you out if he thinks you are endangering his other tenants. Whatever the costs of doing business are, well, that's what they are, just factor them into your price list. On the other hand, most locations do not have a problem with a mini torch, or propane and small oxygen cylinders. But it depends on where you are, local codes differ. You can always look for a location that permits jewelry repair on premises. As for sprinklers, I think a fire extinguisher should be good enough, just make sure to have a couple of them, and place them so the fire will not be between you and the extinguisher.
