Understand The Stock Market

If you are going to invest in the stock market, it is important to understand some of the basic terms associated with this practice. When you trade stocks from publicly traded companies, you do so at a stock market, or stock exchange. Probably one of the most well-known and famous stock exchanges is the New York Stock Exchange, or NYSE.

To use an analogy that might explain the process a bit better, your neighborhood probably has a large grocery store that sells food and other things. When you need to buy all the types of foods that you need, like meat, bread, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and other things, you head to the grocery store to get everything that you need. This beats the option of going to a fruit stand, then a butcher shop, then a dairy, then a bakery, etc. The NYSE, then, is kind of like a grocery store for stocks. It's a big room where everyone goes to do all of their buying and selling of stocks in one place, rather than going around from company to company. Like a grocery store, this method of stock management is very convenient.

Stock markets or exchanges can make both buying and selling very easy. Instead of going all the way to New York to go to the NYSE in person, you can do business with a stock broker who works directly with the NYSE. He or she will deal with the NYSE for you on your behalf to sell or buy the stocks that you want. If we didn't have the NYSE, doing all of this buying and selling of stock would be very difficult. For example, people would have to put an ad in the paper in the classified section, wait for the phone to ring and then barter and argue over the price of the stock you wanted to sell.

Because all of the buying and selling of stock is all done in one place like the NYSE, an interesting phenomenon takes place. Investors can know the price of a stock at any time during the day. This side effect means that investors may keep tabs on the way the price of a stock changes based on media reports, news from the company, national news about the economy, and other things.
