Sleep Disorder, Symptom Of Depression ?

Q: I only seem to have one very strong symptom that is causing me trouble (more and more actually) which is that I sleep way too much; I usually sleep between 9 and 15 hours. Like just today, I slept a little more than 8 hours, forced me to get up breakfast, but I was so slow and sleepy that I decided to go back to sleep and slept another 6 hours, now I feel a bit better.

A:It was suggested there that I may be suffering an unipolar depression and I searched and found a diagnosis page on the internet where it seems I would answer yes to most of the first questions, and rule out any other special disorders, making the disorder to be pretty well diagnosed as unipolar depression. Now, I don't like much to see doctors, I'll probably do that this week and I have to say that I really do not want to take any kind of medication, unless some physical sickness is found. I love to read and I read much about psychology, I'd like to read more about unipolar depression, it treatments, etc... Maybe I can try a few things myself, alone and observe a change. I'm "autodidacte" which means I learn by myself in books or on the internet (compared to learning with a teacher). So if you can provide any help, links, URLs, documents... anything would be very much appreciated to help me fight this disorder that is currently ruining my social, professionnal and personnal life. have you had your thyroid levels checked? low thyroid can mimic depression. imo, i would definitely see a doc to rule other things out first. as far as url's go, just google depression and you'll get more info than you could ever read. here are several that i really like... http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.html http://home.blarg.net/~charlatn/Depression.html http://my.webmd.com/medical_information/condition_centers/depression/...
