Law Schools In Nashville

Q: How many law schools are in TN? Any in Nashville? Is Tennessee State University a quality institution? How would you rank in 1 - 10?

A:Tennessee State has a lot of good programs, but unfortunately it's not in a very good area of town and takes a rap for that. Its business school is actually quite good. I'm not saying it's another Owen, but it's a lot better than many think. As far as law schools, Vanderbilt, Memphis State and UT Knoxville are the public institutions that offer a law degree. Nashville has the Nashville School of Law, but it's not an accredited program. What that means is a degree from there is essentially useless outside the state of TN because graduating from an accredited school is a requirement for sitting for the bar in most states. TN has passed an exemption that allows NSoL graduates to sit for the bar in TN. The Nashville School of Law is very interested in getting accredited, but is at a funding disadvantage. For that reason, it's looking to partner with other schools possibly. Last year, Lebanon's Cumberland University started talking with them about

a possible arrangement that would help them get the money required for going through the accreditation procedure. In Tennessee, Memphis State, Vanderbilt, Nashville School of Law, and UT Knoxville. Total of Four. In Nashville, Vanderbilt and Nashville School of Law. Tennessee State University has suffered from a lack of identity and a lack of funding as compared to Memphis State and UT-Knoxville and UT some other campuses. It was formerly an all black institution and has suffered financially by being deprived historically of proper funding and support. To what extent that has been remedied is an arguable point, but I believe TSU offers a quality education.
