Ged Com

Q: My husband told me over the weekend that Michigan is phasing out the GED. As of December 31, it will no longer be administered or accepted in MI or by MI employers. Does anyone know if this is true or where I could find out information about this ??? We wondered if this had anything to do with Goals 2000.

A:Don't know anything about MI in particular BUT "professional" educators continue to push for laws and regulations that prevent smart kids from taking the GED exam unless they are over high school age or they are "official" dropouts. For a time the military would not accept recruits with a GED. I think "they" changed the rules when quotas were not being met. When I was a platoon leader in the US Army (1970) I checked the personal folders of the men in my platoon and found that about 1/3 of them had GEDs. There was NOTHING wrong with the GED holders. Don't know but Gov. Allen (now Senator Allen) of VA turned down about $3 million of Goals 2000 money because of the strings.
