Q: When you are seeking a divorce lawyer, you should look for someone with experience and someone who specializes or does predominantly family law or divorce work. A: From a 'users' view, I would throw in also that one has to provide the lawyer with goals and try to monitor what's going on and try to be sure that the case isn't being managed to maximize the billable hours spent. A real acrimonious divorce puts the lawyers' kids through college and just leaves the parties apparently broke and burned out. A lawyer will no doubt have advice and alternatives to offer you and you have to make choices and have goals. Most of those goals need to be future-oriented. In '91 I married someone in the PRC after spending quite a bit of time in Hong Kong where she worked. Of course I did not appreciate the very high risk involved from a citizen of the PRC. She soon disappeared here and surfaced in Reno with an English man she thought was rich, divorced me, immediately got a fiance visa from the UK consulate in LA (who knew the story), and now is in London. Actually, a lawyer in California in that circumstance is a waste of time unless kids or property are involved. But I had to figure that out for myself over time. In fact, I was just strung along for billable hours into four digits. I finally got what I came to regard as a quite effective and straightforward lawyer in Reno by a good referral from clients through someone I have known for 20 years. I think that's the way to go - assess your referring person first, then the lawyer recommended. If you're facing a really unscrupulous and manipulative person as I was there's no time to be shell-shocked - you have to be effective, protect yourself, and just chalk it up. The attorneys who answered the original post seemed entirely reasonable but I'm just suggesting that referrals from clients through someone you know to be a sound person is the best way if you can do it. For both your own and the other party's lawyer, don't forget to look them up in directories and check with the Bar Association to actually verify their standing to practice.
