Which Gold Nugget Detector?

Q: OK, Experts, What is the best gold nugget detector for finding small gold items? Things like diamond stud gold ear rings. I need one for less than $800.

A: I'm not a nugget hunter, but nobody has answered you, so here goes. If I'm wrong somebody will probably jump in quickly to correct me... Gold jewelry is not pure gold; it is alloyed with other metals and that changes its conductivity. Which changes what a metal detector sees. For example, gold rings have just about the same conductivity as pulltabs. So a gold ring will give you a pulltab reading because your detector can't tell them apart. This is quite different than the reading you would get with a raw gold nugget. So what I'm saying is that if you are seeking gold jewelry, you don't want to buy a gold nugget machine. A good coin machine will do the job fine. (I personally love the Fisher CZ-5). I have been doing a little research on the TLST. It might be what I will try. I think I will e-mail Tesoro to see what they say. maybe they will take one to the local jewel store. Perhaps they will send one for me to do a little testing with. that would be nice and possibly benefit both of us.
