The history of the Whitehall jewelry company stretches back over a hundred years to a young man Hugo Marks. He was a young immigrant who came to the United States of America at the age of 16. He was a hard worker and apprenticed himself in New York City to learn and become practiced in the art of jewelry making. He was determined to work hard and convinced that if he did so, he would find success. The history of Whitehall jewelry is long and peppered with hard work and a pioneering spirit. Marks went to Chicago after his apprenticeship to work in his uncle's jewelry store. This gave him valuable business experience. Eventually Marks and his brother purchased the shop from their uncle and closed it down for a time to revamp. In 1946 the store reopened and renamed as Marks Bros. They wanted to make something for themselves, not simply work in someone else's jewelry store. They had great success and so began the expansion of the company. They opened shops in other places in Chicago by virtue of their hard work and a stated goal of making the jewelry shopping experience a pleasant one. By 1948 Marks children had taken over the business and soon another company expansion took place. Stores were opened in other major cities like San Francisco, Beverly Hills, and Detroit. The company also included other brands, including Whitehall jewelry. The company that sells Whitehall jewelry also added a third brand, Lundstrom jewelers in Fort Meyers, Florida. Today, Whitehall jewelry is still in the family. It is publicly traded, however, and offers upscale jewelry and an upscale shopping experience. The company keeps its stores small, so that even thought they are located in malls and shopping centers the experience is still personal and enjoyable.
