Jewelry Box Size?

Q: I am looking for plans, pictures ,ideas for small wooden boxes, jewelry box size. My workshop includes a 12 in. table saw, bandsaw , jigsaw, router (plunge type) and various planes (hand) saws etc. book titles. magazines etc available in australia would be a real help. My competence level is probably advanced learner. Thanks in advance.

A: Try calling American Woodworker magazine (610-967-8315) and ordering re-prints or back issues of "Bandsaw Box" by Jay O'Rourke (AW Dec. '95, issue #49) and "Jewelry Chest" by Michael Sage (AW Oct. '96, issue #54). Both projects are simple to make, and elegant. The bandsaw box is small-- about 2 in. by 2 1/2 in. x 3 in.-- and can be made almost entirely on the bandsaw. It has a lid that pivots up on a wooden dowel. O'Rourke uses whatever beautiful scrap wood he has on hand. Sage's jewelry chest (it's really a box) measures about 15 in. wide by 8 in. deep by 8 in. high. It has four drawers for storing valuables. He makes the box by mitering and splining the four corners with a simple tablesaw jig. He hangs the drawers on wooden runners glued into the case sides. Gorgeous thing made from claro walnut and fiddleback maple.
