They used to recover gold from computers, (and I presume other
electronic equipment), but I haven't heard of anyone asking for old
PCs for that, I can only presume the price has dropped so much it's no
longer economic.
Massive gold imports occur around the period and very few gold smugglers
are arrested, once the bridal season is over you start getting reports of
smugglers being arrested and imprisoned for long periods.
