Gold is one of the most versatile metals known to humankind. Not only has it been used as money, it has been used to build statues, idols and to adorn the body. Gold jewelry has been around since the melting of gold was discovered. It is used as a sign of wealth and to flatter the wearer. Many people own at least one piece of gold jewelry; it is considered an essential. Gold, when used in jewelry, is rate by karats. Pure gold is 24 karat. Because gold is so soft and malleable, gold jewelry in 24 karats is very rare. This is because every day use can easily be scored, scratched or misshaped. As the karat number goes down, so too does the percentage of actual gold in a piece of gold jewelry. The most popular grades of gold are 10, 14 and 18 karats. While other grades are available, these are the most common and popular used in gold jewelry. 10 karat gold contains less than 50 percent actual gold. It is more inexpensive as a result. Also, it is the least likely to be marred by every day use. 10 karat gold is popular in costume jewelry. 14 karat gold is considered just a step below truly fine. It is popular for use in engagement rings, as it doesn't score easily and can be worn daily. Anything above 14 karats is generally considered fine gold jewelry. Because of its versatility, gold is used in many types of jewelry: earrings, finger rings, bracelets, necklaces and anklets. Gold jewelry comes in all shapes and sizes. It even comes in white (which looks like silver) for those who do not like yellow gold, but wish to own gold jewelry. Because it is so malleable, gold can be large and thick or small, thin and delicate. Any taste can be accommodated when shopping for gold jewelry. It also lends itself well to custom creations. Additionally, gold can be combined with a variety of other metals (silver, platinum, copper, etc.) and set with jewels and gemstones. Tawdry and garish or elegant and refined, gold jewelry is timeless in its appeal. Because of this quality, gold jewelry is as fashionable now as it was anciently.
