Celtic Jewelry
We think of the Celts as mainly located in Great Britain and Ireland, but they migrated throughout Europe before the bulk of them finally settled in what we consider Celtic territory. As a result, the Celts have had a profound influence on Western culture. Nowhere is this influence more visible than in jewelry. Celtic jewelry is perennially popular, and there are many designs that allow for creativity and self-expression. While many use Celtic jewelry to showcase their heritage, many of non-Celtic descent find the jewelry to be attractive and interesting. Many who do not have specifically Celtic heritage connect the wearing of Celtic jewelry to the idea of a connection with the earth. Many Wiccans and other practicing Pagans incorporate Celtic jewelry into their religious attire. One of the most popular pieces of Celtic jewelry is the Claddagh ring. This ring is said to have originated in the 17th Century in the village of Claddagh near Galloway in Ireland. The ring features a heart, held between two hands, topped with a crown. This beautiful piece of Celtic jewelry can be made in gold or silver. The heart can be of metal, but some rings feature a heart shaped from emerald, diamond or colored glass. An emerald can add true Irish/Celtic flair to the jewelry. The heart worn pointed in symbolizes that the wearer is spoken for. The ring can be worn on the right hand, but when this piece of Celtic jewelry is worn on the left, pointed in, it is in a place of honor, indicating everlasting friendship and love in marriage. Celtic jewelry can make beautiful wedding rings. In Scottish culture, a Trinity Knot is used to symbolize spiritual growth and the eternally progressive nature of the soul. As a ring, this traditional piece of Celtic jewelry shows dedication in the everlasting journey together. The knot is a recurring theme throughout all Celtic jewelry, be it rings, pendants, brooches or the ever-popular Celtic cross. Celtic jewelry is so often done in silver or gold because these materials are easy to mold into the intricate designs. Celtic jewelry, with its interwoven sinuous lines, is complex in its simplicity. A piece of Celtic jewelry can add distinction to any jewelry collection.
