Can A Man Wear A Ring?

Q: I know that a man is not suppose to wear gold jewelry. I was reading in the Muwatta. One paragragh said that Muhammad threw away the ring he was wearing but the next one seemed to give permission to wear one.

A: from my experience pious muslim men avoid wearing a gold ring but do wear silver rings. specific quotes or references would be interesting see Enc. of Islam II "Khatam, Khatim". according to the article: the prohibition through Hadith is about wearing gold rings, which are forbidden, but the Prophet did wear (according to the reports) a silver signet ring. also prohibited, according to the article, are brass rings because of their alledged association with paganism and iron rings becaue of their cited association with the Damned. but silver is OK. Well... To accessories themself with non-essential items anyway. For example, a man isn't suppose to wear silk, but if his skin condition requires him to wear it, he is allowed to wear it. Muhammad weared a ring since that it's a stamp ring, a signet ring. He used it to stamp officials letters. Why did he did it? Well.., it's because the officials in other countries refused to deals with messages that is without official stamps. So, it's all about bureaucracy. Muhammad throwed his ring away (after he make it into a necklace, so can he hide it) because he was affraid that EVERYONE who follows him wears one too. You see, everything that Muhammad did, people are supposed to copied them all. Muhammad just think that wearing a ring or a necklace is not a mandatory thing to do, since it will only just be a burden if everyone is require to wear it. So... Wearing a ring isn't mandatory, but it's all right if one wears one.
