Q: A friend of mine who is in jewelry wholesale in Asia wants to export higher calibre gold jewelry to the US
A: He says he has noticed a trend in the USA towards higher-calibre gold jewelry peices, 18kt - 24kt. Have you noticed this trend? Can anyone provide related figures/data? hat is your personal experience?
A: This is not really a trend. There has always been a demand for high karat jewelry, especially in the upscale market (18 K), the high craft/handmade jewelry market (22 K) and now we are seeing a demand for 24 K from ethnic groups such as Chinese and those from the Mid-east who now call the USA home. I suppose that it could be that now that the economy is doing well, some people who in the past wanted higher karat gold but couldn't afford it, can now or are at least more willing to pay for 18 K rather than 10 or 14 K.
