Nike dates back to 1962 when a track coach at the University of Oregon named Bill Bowerman and an accounting student that was a middle distance runner named Phil Knight had the dream to the high tech running shoes to America from Japan. In the 1960's the German shoes controlled the athletic shoe industry. Bowerman and Knight soon went into business together Asics were the new shoes on the market that were being sold in America. They came from Onitsuka Tiger and were sold by Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS). A few years later in 1965, a rival of Knights, Jeff Johnson, joined their company and became their very first full time salesman. He sold the shoes to high school track runners out of the back of his van and soon he opened up their first retail store in Santa Monica, California. Bowerman strived to improve the Onitsuka Tiger design and that soon sent the team into a brand new direction. The new company soon landed a name given to them by Johnson. It was Nike and it took on a whole now face. Bowerman had new designs for the shoes and now, forty years down the road, Nike is still running strong and is one of the most profitable in the athletic industry.
