Investment management refers to a field of professional management that deals with the management of securities investments. The securities in most cases are shares, bonds and other securities. The term is also used to refer to the management of other assets like real estate. The aim of investing whether in the assets or in the securities is to achieve some targets which will be of benefit to investors as well as the investment companies. There are investment managers who deal mainly with advisory and discretionary management and in more cases deal with management on behalf of the wealthy private investors sometimes call the services they offer as wealth management of portfolio management.

Among the key services that investment managers offer their clients include asset selection, plan implementation, monitoring and appraisal of investment progress, stock selection, and financial statement analysis. The profession of investment and asset management is a large one and is just another full-fledged industry in its own right. The industry handles and manages trillions of dollar, yens, pounds, euros and other leading world currencies. Majority of investment management companies also offer financial management while major companies in the world also engage partly in investment management through which they employ millions of staffs worldwide.

The term fund manager is also used loosely to mean investment advisor in the US and may refer to a firm that offers the services of investment management as well as the person who is in charge of the investment companies and who direct the decisions pertaining to fund management.

Investment and asset management industry is a big one that handles sums of monies that run into trillions. Their business is to earn money for the investors. Good management of the funds entrusted to them is beneficial for all the parties that are involved.
