Once you've made the decision to buy travel health insurance you need to know what to expect from the policies that are available to you. Most travel agency plans will offer two types of coverage: (1) trip cancellation/interruption, and (2) emergency medical evacuation in the event that you need to return home during a medical emergency. When you buy travel health insurance for trip cancellation or interruption you'll be reimbursed for any nonrefundable deposits that you have already paid for your trip if you're unable to go due to a medical condition or if you need to return home early. This type of travel health insurance will, however, only pay out the policy when you have to cancel or leave early for a reason that is covered under the insurance policy that you've taken out. You need to make sure you read the fine print on your medical policy so that you know just what is covered, what isn't covered, and what the differences are between the two. You can buy travel health insurance that will cover what are known as "unforeseen emergencies and circumstances". This can include an accident, a natural disaster, flood, or fire. Once again you'll have to find out from your insurance broker exactly what the conditions are on your existing travel health insurance for which you are covered. For example, if the touring company with which you're booked suddenly goes out of business your health travel insurance most likely won't cover the situation since it isn't related to a health or emergency issue. Make sure that your travel health insurance plan covers the costs of transporting you to safety when you have a medical emergency outside of the country. Make sure that you find out what health insurance benefits will apply while you're on vacation in a foreign country. You many already have health insurance that will cover part of a medical problem that occurs when you're away from home. Whatever happens, you don't want to be on vacation and risk not having any travel health insurance. Always ask plenty of questions when you buy your travel health insurance so that you've as informed as possible for any medical situations that may arise while you're on a trip. You need to know what will happen if you break a leg or if you need to see a doctor.
