Individual Health Insurance

Finding affordable individual health insurance isn't as easy as it once was. These days there is no perfect individual health insurance plan however there are some health plans that will be better for you and your family when it comes to healthcare that is adequate for your needs. What your individual health insurance needs are will determine not only which health insurance plan is best for you but will also determine what type of health care coverage you should choose such as PPO, HMO, Health Savings Account, or perhaps an indemnity plan. The question is: do you need an individual policy? The answers to this will vary. If you are not employed, are self employed, or end up returning to school you'll want to buy individual health insurance so that you're well covered since you don't have an employer to help you with the insurance. There are some things that you should consider when you're considering individual health insurance. Ask your insurance company if you have the ability to convert their group policy to an individual policy at any time. You may end up paying a higher rate than you did before and have benefits that are limited but the terms of the policy will still be better than if you purchase your own individual health insurance policy. If you are married you should check to see if you've covered in any way by your spouse's health insurance program. Try to join a group health insurance plan through your alumni group from college or professional association that you belong to. You may be able to find some reasonable rates. If you are over age the age of 55 you can join the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) which will offer more than one extensive plan for you to choose from. There are even some credit card companies that offer some types of individual health insurance coverage. As a last resort, you can buy an individual policy. Although the rates will be high on individual health insurance, and the coverage limited, it's very important that you have health insurance in place so that you're well protected against financial difficulty if you, or your family, face a major illness, accident, or injury. If you are self-employed keep in mind that most of the individual health insurance premiums will be tax-deductible.
