Capital gains may not be something that you have personally had to deal with yet, however, they are important to know about. SOme people don't know this but you can also have to pay capital gains tax on shares that you may hold in companies.

When you buy a stock in a certain company you own a share of that company which you can sell to someone else if you so choose. The stock or share of that company that you own is called an investment. An investment can go up or down in value over time and you can either lose money or make money when you sell that investment.

Capital gains tax is a tax that you pay on capital gains you make on the sale of your assets. These assets can include rental properties and stocks or shares that you have in a company. If you guy your company for a certain amount, say $10,000, and then sell it for $20,000, you will make a capital gain of $10,000 since you made $10,000 in the sale of that asset. You are required to pay taxes on that gain to the IRS. The Internal Revenue Service is where you pay your normal taxes during a regular tax year as well. You pay your capital gains taxes at the same time you pay your regular income taxes as a capital gain is income.

Although capital gains taxes may see to be unnecessary you pay taxes you make while you are working and this is really no difference, except that these capital gains are generally considered unearned income not earned income, like you earn while working. All in all, capital gains taxes must be paid at the end of ever year just like you need to pay your normal income taxes. Failure to pay tax on the income you get from capital gains.
