Income Tax Was Withheld.
Q: I have a full time job. I also have worked as on-call at another job throughout the last year. I recieved my W-2 form this month and I noticed the part-time job did not withhold any federal income tax, although state and local income tax was withheld. I ask why and my response was "I did not make enough to have federal income tax withheld". I have not been in this position before and I do not know if this business is telling the truth or if the business is trying to pull a fast one. Because of my full time job earnings I will have to pay federal income tax for the part time job. Has any one else experienced this situation? Or, does any one know where I can find more information regarding this subject.
A: Each employer you work for withholds taxes based upon your earnings for that employer and information you provide on the W-4 withholding form. Your part-time employer could be correct in stating that you did not earn enough in that job to have taxes withheld. Complete the W-4 worksheet and treat the income from your part-time job as spouse income. That should get you in the ballpark for correct withholding between the two jobs.
