Heartburn And Acid Reflux
Q: One of the great benefits of Atkins for me was curing my heartburn and acid
reflux. I Hadn't taken Tums in more than 3 years. Then over New Year's weekend I
went overboard on the carbs. Probably 60g or more for a few days. I normally
stay under 30g. Two nights I had heartburn and one night I had acid reflux.
That alone is enought to get me back on the straight and narrow.
Can anyone in the group help me please?
A:That's one of the reasons why I like this diet. I used to have acid reflux 2 or 3 times a week with no apparent link to which food(s) it could be. I have not had a single bout of it since lo-carbing. I suspect it was grains but did not experiment to identify it for sure. It could also have been the weight of my stomach pulling to one side. All I know is that I no longer have this problem. My brother also has acid reflux, but uses a prescription medication to keep it under control. I've been trying to convince him to try lo-carb, but he believes all the negative media about the diet and doesn't want to try it right now. I would not deny a connection to overeating but that was certainly not the only factor, nor necessarily the factor of greatest influence...for me at least. I can recall many months (and several times) of eating on a low-fat diet at 1000-1200 calories/day where there was no relief whatsoever from the heartburn, though it did finally tend to diminish after a substantial loss in weight, compared to difference with low-carb where the effect was quite rapid. I don't know that there is one correct answer to this but I've tended to attribute this more to food types than quantities. There are two foods which to this day will cause me great anguish in terms of heartburn--radishes and raw green peppers in any quantity--but it would not surprise me at all to find that the re-introduction of refined sugar or batter fried stuff would start it all over again, but I'm not about to experiment to find out. This is certainly one of those things with lots of variables, none of which I could begin to catalog and track to any meaningful end outside my own experience. However, in my own experience the difference was profound and immediate.
