Does Coffee Cause Heartburn

Q: Is it normal for coffee to cause heart burn? I have been drinking a class of black coffee at work every morning and it has cause awful heartburn the fast few days. I love it ice cold (black) about 16oz. Its a new habbit that I have enjoyes so I was wondering if coffee is known to cause heart burn or if its something else? I believe its columbian coffee we make there! Can anyone in the group help me please?

A:coffee relaxes the muscles at the top of the stomach releasing excess acid, try drinking yerba mate, it will pick you up and help you sleep better without the side effects of coffee coffee can cause heartburn. If you love it and don't think you can live without your iced brew, you could try a few adjustments. Decaf may be gentler on your stomach. Try a smaller amount. Sixteen ounces is a big, walloping amount of coffee! Try an antacid before and after the treat. If the Columbian coffee is a strong roast, then that may be a factor also. Hopefully, you can tweak it a bit and still enjoy your iced coffee. Just try a few changes. Coffee is acidic so it can aggrivate or exacerbate any pre-existing stomach problems or even cause some if you're prone to them. Folgers makes a "stomach friendly" coffee that you can buy at the stores (I think it has a green label) because it's less acidic. My father drinks it and he says that it works for him.
