Acid Reflux In Pregnancy

Q: I have 2 children now and would like to have another one. I have a condition called acid reflux disease..caused by a hiatal hernia. Basically I get really bad heartburn because the acid in my stomach goes back up my esophagus. I have been on a med (prilosec) for 4 years..after my last pregnancy. I had to come off this because it is not safe to take during pregnancy and we want to start trying for our third soon. Anyways...I am now on prescription strength zantac (150 mg 2 times a day). My OB/GYN okayed this during a pregnancy. It helps but I still get a little heartburn. Just wondering if anyone else has been on this or has any other suggestions for this problem. ! Has anyone ever been on a higher dosage than 300 mg per day. I found one person that said she was able to take 600 mg per day during her pregnancy so I am going to see what my doctor days about that.

A:I have had horrible heartburn throughout my pregnancy (I am at 35 weeks now) and I just went on 150mg of Zantac 2x a day, primarily because the reflux was exacerbating my asthma and causing bad attacks. Boy, do I wish I had started on this stuff sooner....it is great, and according to my OB safe for pregnancy. Reflux and asthma symptoms much better. A for higher dosages, I don't know - you would have to ask your doctor. Other things that helped me: -we put cement blocks under the head side of the bed so that there is a 3-4" incline where my head and torso hit. That has helped with heartburn at night. Apparently propping up your head with pillows in some people can actually make the heartburn worse, as it cuts off your torso around your stomach and esophagus -I still monitor my diet and avoid tomatoes, citrus, mint, chocolate, coffee/caffine, which are all no-nos for heartburn -sometimes a small (3-4oz) of milk works, but not always (depends on the food eaten) -6-7 small meals a day as opposed to 3 Those are some suggestions (you probably have heard of them already) that have really worked for me.
