"in Baghdad District, U.s. Forces No Longer Welcome" By Christine Hauser

Q: ""Freedom under the gun is no freedom at all," said Abdel Karim al-Shara." There it is, the millennia old realization. It comes from the mouth of a first rate witness, a present day Iraqi living on the some of the World's most ancient settled lands, an heir of millennia of human civilization and high culture. Who can reasonably contest his statement or what it implies, "Imperialists go home!"

A: If, at this point, we simply pulled out, lock, stock and barrels, a tremendous civil bloodbath would immediately ensue. If we did pull out now, it *would* be like the Vietnam War (police action actually) where 2 MILLION people were killed within 4 months after we pulled out. Agree entirely, but there's no reason that the coalition forces which undertook the overthrow of Saddam can't be replaced by another force operating with the same remit to stabilise Iraq and return control over to Iraqis in an organised manner. The psychological effect of the US being seen as "invaders who are unwilling to leave" seems to be having a profound effect on the natives, and it's time to seriously look at the alternatives.
